 Following the Way

We give glory and praise to you, O God!
In your generosity you invite all peoples to join you at the heavenly banquet.
We ask that you guide us so we can enter your kingdom through the narrow gate. Empower us to build your reign here and now through works of justice, attitudes
of inclusiveness, and behaviors
balanced by self-giving.
Draw us into a deeper relationship
with Jesus that we might
follow his way. Amen.

    Questions of the Week

Isaiah presents the vision of a world transformed by God's action. Similarly, Jesus offers his teaching on the Reign of God, which is all-inclusive. The disciple is urged to move from complacency and presumptuousness into a spirit of action for building the kingdom.

Adults: How can I enter into a deeper relationship with Jesus?

Children: What does Jesus say about inviting all to be my friend
?

Happy Birthday
Mother Teresa
August 26th

Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person,
a beautiful thing.

"If we have no peace,
it is because we have
forgotten that we belong
to each other."

-- Mother Teresa

Do It Anyway
Sign In Mother Teresa's Office

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.

Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.

Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.

Succeed anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.

Be happy anyway.
        The good you do today,
will often be forgotten.

Do good anyway.

I
f you are honest and sincere
people may deceive you.

Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.

Create anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.

Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.

It was never between you and them anyway.

    Meditation Moment

A wealthy woman was a faithful churchgoer. Plaques of her many contributions adorned buildings and objects. One day she died. An angel met her at heaven's gate and  escorted her down a wide boulevard lined with large, lovely mansions. As they walked, as they walked the mansions turned into houses that got progressively smaller. Finally, they
came to a one-room hut. "Here you are, madam," said the angel. "What?" she said indignantly. "There must be some mistake!" "I'm sorry," said the angel, "This was the best we could do with what you sent us during your life."

For Reflection . . .
What is my main motivation in
donating something to a cause?
In giving something?

(Jesus said,) "When you give something . . . do it in such a way
that even your closest friend will not know about it."

                            Matthew 6:2-3

 ARE YOU READY?

Once again, Luke reminds us that Jesus is teaching his followers on the way to Jerusalem. These "journey to Jerusalem" passages in Luke represent a period of formation for his disciples. As followers of Jesus today, we need to pay attention to these teachings as well.
This particular Gospel stresses the point that entry into the kingdom is not guarenteed. Jesus emphasizes this truth by shaking the traditional belief that Israel was guarenteed Salvation. The "narrow door" reminds us that the gate to the kingdom is as narrow as the cross. The closed door focuses upon the immediacy of the coming kingdom, urging all to act so as not be left knocking.
It is not enough to pay lip service to faith in Jesus. What is needed for the true disciple is to be committed to that faith which flows into a relationship of knowing and being known by Jesus.
This Gospel closes with the familiar inversion of what the world thinks. Jesus states that  "sone are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last" (Luke 13:30). This warning serves to rattle our complacency into action and vigilance.

Today's Gospel stresses the results when we fail to respond to the invitation to fully follow Jesus. This is not God excluding us; rather, it is our refusal to heed the wake-up call. Before us are some powerful lessons that shake us out of our thinking that we have the formula for getting to Heaven. The life of a true disciple is about active preparation for the kingdom where justice, peace, and selfless love reign.
