 A Prayer of
 Thanksgiving

Lord, I thank you for
great things: the relationships which give me life, the work which gives me satisfaction,
the faith which gives me hope. I thank you for small things: the smile from a stranger, the comfort of
my favorite chair, the fresh smell after the rain. I thank you for overlooked things: the breath which gives me life, the neighborhood in which I live, the friend who is a companion. They are all your blessings. Make me grateful. Amen.

I thank my God every time
I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.

  Questions of the Week

The Father in today's parable insists that the elder son must celebrate because his brother has returned. The parable never tells us whether the elder son agrees and enters the feast. It thereby invites us to choose between anger and gratitude.

Adults: Am I envious of anyone? Do I believe that my own blessings are not enough?

Children: What person makes my life joyful and good? Have I thanked God for this person?

A Choice of Gratitude or Anger

There are two kinds of people in the world: people of gratitude and people of anger. The grateful person rises every morning saying, :Thank you for this day." The angry person starts each day complaining about what he or she does not have.
The sin of the elder son in today's Gospel is ingratitude. The elder son was a blessed individual. He had been born into a wealthy family to a father who loved him deeply and who entrusted him with everything. This son also had his health. The parable says that he was strong enough to be out working in the fields. He also had friends. He mentions them as he complains to his father. In so many ways, this elder son was blessed time and again.
But he was not thankful. If he had been thankful, he would have been able to rejoice when his younger brother came home. But because he was ungrateful, all he could do was react in jealousy and anger; all he could do was compare himself to his younger brother because he could not claim the love and joy that were his own possession.
Every day God is holding a celebration, a banquet with music and dancing. Our only choice is whether we will participate in that celebration or sit outside sulking like the elder son. God's celebration of life will go on with us or without us. But if we want to be joyful, we must set anger aside, be thankful, and enter the feast.
