Saint of the Month
Catholic saints are holy people and human people who lived extraordinary lives. Each saint the Church honors responded to God's invitation to use his or her unique gifts. God calls each one of us to be a saint.
Saint
Bernard of
Clairvaux

abbot and doctor
Feast Day August 20
St. Bernard was born in 1090 to a wealthy and noble father. Bernard was well educated.
His mother, whom he loved dearly, died when he was a young man, Deeply touched by her death and with a growing love of God, Bernard entered the Cistercians at Cîteaux in 1112.
As a monk, Bernard worked tirelessly to strengthen religious life. His sermons and writings, inspired the people of his time. They were a result of Bernard's own experience of God's grace in his life.
The needs of the Church and his society continually called this saint from his monastery. Popes, bishops, and princes sought his advice in matters of policy and politics. He always sought to keep the Christian faith uncompromised.
The hearts of men and women throughout Europe were stirred by the faith and eloquence of this dynamic saint. His great prayers to Mary, the Mother of God - for example, his "Memorare" - are witness to his strong devotion to her as well as her Son. He died at Clairvaux on August 20, 1153. Bernard is a Doctor of the Church.
Lord, what will you have me do? Here is the sign of a perfect spirit. Someone who leaves aside his or her own will so that they no longer seek or desire to do what they want, but only what God wills.

Nobody ever outgrows Scripture,
the book widens
and deepens
with our years.

Jesus hadn't eaten in forty days. He was hungry, tired and alone. That's when Satan came to test him, to see if Jesus would obey his Father, no matter what.
Considering how hungry Jesus was, turning stojnes into bread was tempting. After all, there was really nothing wrong with providing himself some food - except that it was not his Father's plan. Jesus answered Satan's challenge by quoting a verse from the OLd Testament. Satan quoted a verse right back at him. Satan knew Sqripture, but he didn't obey it. Jesus knew that the true power of God's Word came from doing what it said.
